I have been collaborating on a website uniting issues on sustainability, one of its aims is to raise funds for projects that contribute positively to environmental problems.
One of the companies (Sculpted Design) that we are working with are doing a fantastic project in the Tonga, creating recycling machinery for three islands to deal with ocean plastic and ongoing waste streams. These will deal with waste from clean-ups, give communities the potential to process plastics for resale and produce lightweight construction materials, replacing imported goods like timber, roofing tiles, etc… The long term goal is to set up a model for worldwide communities to create similar models with instruction at production cost or less.
After a long period of research I decided to create a body of work to purge a surplus of anxiety around climate change and pollution and the result is a series of collages produced using digital and traditional printmaking techniques. The imagery come from illustrations by Gustav Doré and deal with stories, fables and parables that connect to the Anthropocene.
